Corrugated is a structure, cardboard is a sheet, kraft is a pulp. See how the three differ and which box type fits your product, shipping and shelf.
Corrugated vs Cardboard vs Kraft: What Each Word Really Means
Ask three suppliers what kind of box your product needs and you may get three different words back: corrugated, cardboard, kraft. Ask three buyers what those words mean and you will get a fourth answer, because all three get used interchangeably in quotes, marketplace listings and internal spec sheets.
The confusion is not carelessness. It is that the three words belong to three different categories. Corrugated describes how a board is built. Cardboard describes a single flat sheet. Kraft describes how the paper was made and what it looks like. A box can be corrugated and kraft at once. A box can be paperboard and kraft at once. Once you separate structure from sheet from pulp, most packaging arguments resolve themselves in a single sentence — and the spec you send to a factory stops being ambiguous.
The vocabulary problem: structure, sheet, pulp
Here is the correction that matters most: these three terms are not alternatives on one scale, and treating them as if they were is where bad specs come from.
- Corrugated answers the question how is this board constructed?
- Cardboard / paperboard answers the question is this one sheet or several?
- Kraft answers the question how was the pulp processed, and what does the surface look like?
You can combine them. You can also fail to combine them. A “kraft box” might be a thin folding carton that holds a candle, or a heavy shipping case with kraft-coloured liners — same word, completely different object. That is why a spec that says only “kraft box” is not a spec. It is a colour preference with a structure missing.
What corrugated actually is, and what the flute does
Corrugated board is a sandwich. Two flat liner sheets are bonded to a fluted layer in between — a wave-shaped sheet that stands on edge rather than lying flat. That fluted layer is the whole point of the material. It creates a series of arched voids between the liners, so when something presses on the outer surface, the liner can flex inward and the fluted walls push back, rather than the whole panel going flat at once.
What this means in practice, without any numbers attached:
- The fluting gives the board its cushioning behaviour and its stiffness in one direction, and much less in the other. That is why corrugated boxes are strongest when the flutes run vertically in the walls and the load sits on the corners.
- A corrugated box that visibly bows or flexes under a heavy item is usually not a “bad material” problem. It is a load-path problem — weight is being carried by the panels instead of the corners, or the item inside is unsupported across a span.
- More than one layer of fluting exists for heavier duty work, because the additional fluted layer adds depth between liners. That is a construction choice driven by what the box has to survive, not a quality label.
Corrugated is what shipping boxes are made of: the outer transport container, the e-commerce mailer that arrives at a customer’s door, the case that goes onto a pallet. What cardboard and paperboard actually are
In everyday speech, “cardboard” means any stiff paper box. In packaging work, it usually means paperboard: a single layer of paper-based material, thicker than writing paper and thinner than a corrugated sandwich, with no fluted core. It is a sheet, not a structure.
That single layer is very good at three things. It takes printing well, because the surface is flat and continuous. It folds and creases cleanly, which is what makes a flat-packed carton possible. And it cuts into complex shapes cheaply, which is what lets a carton be die-cut around a window, a tab or a curved silhouette.
What it cannot do is carry a load on its own. Paperboard has no internal void to absorb impact and no second surface to spread force. A folding carton is a container and a printing surface; it is not a shipping structure. Retail shelf-ready packaging, cosmetics cartons, electronics accessory boxes, food and beverage cartons — this is paperboard territory, and it works well there precisely because the box is not expected to take the abuse of a parcel network on its own.
The honest trade-off to remember: paperboard gives you a better printed surface and a more elegant fold, and gives you less protection against impact. If you find yourself adding a paperboard carton inside a shipping box, that is not over-engineering. That is two materials doing two different jobs.
What kraft describes, and why it can be either construction
Kraft is a papermaking term. It refers to a pulping method and, by extension, to the natural, unbleached-looking brown sheet that the method produces. It is a description of the material’s origin and appearance — not a box structure, not a grade you can specify on its own, and not a promise about how the finished box will behave.
This is where most comparisons go wrong. A page that ranks “kraft” alongside “corrugated” is comparing a surface with a construction. Kraft paper can be formed into a single-layer paperboard and folded into a retail carton. Kraft liner can equally be used as the flat outer surface of a corrugated board. So a kraft box may be a folding carton or a shipping case, and the word alone will not tell you which one you are buying.
Two practical notes for buyers:
- Kraft is also used loosely as a colour description. A box can be printed or coated to look like natural unbleached paper while being made from something else entirely. If the natural look is the design intent, say so explicitly in the brief rather than relying on the word “kraft” to carry both the appearance and the material.
- Textured, uncoated-looking surfaces absorb ink differently from smooth coated ones. Fine detail and small type can lose definition, and solid dark areas can appear less even. If the artwork is detailed, that is a conversation to have before printing, not after.

Read the table across, not down. The first two rows describe objects; the third describes a material property that can appear in either object.
A decision path: four questions before you write the spec
1. How heavy is the product, and how does the weight reach the box? A light item that fills its box sits differently from a dense item that rattles. If the weight lands on the panels rather than the corners, no material name will fix the design — the structure needs to change. This is where the custom packaging category as a whole is worth browsing, because the answer is often a different box type rather than a different material.
2. How does the parcel travel? Courier networks involve sorting, stacking and repeated handling. Palletised freight distributes load very differently. Hand delivery at an event is a third case again. A box that only ever moves on a pallet inside a warehouse can be specified quite differently from one that is dropped through a letterbox route.
3. Is the box seen on a shelf, or only opened at home? If a retail buyer sees it on a shelf next to competitors, the printed surface leads and a paperboard folding carton is usually the right starting point. If it is opened once at a customer’s kitchen table, unboxing order and interior fit matter more than shelf presence, and a corrugated mailer with a printed exterior does the job.
4. How much handling does it survive, and who pays when it does not? Every additional layer of protection is material and volume. The right question is not “what is the strongest box” but “what is the least box that reliably gets this product there”. That calculation belongs to the product, not to the material name.
A few common mappings fall out of those four questions:
- Light, shelf-facing, printed: paperboard folding carton.
- Direct-to-consumer parcel, moderate weight: corrugated mailer box.
- Heavy or multi-item shipment: corrugated shipping box with internal fitment.
- Presentation piece, kept by the customer: rigid box, which is neither a folding carton nor a fluted board — it is built around a stiff core and wrapped. Our gift boxes cover rigid, folding, magnetic and drawer styles.
- The container is the product: a sturdier build, closer to our custom storage boxes than to a transit pack.
- Storage efficiency matters at the buyer’s end: flat-packed structures such as drawer boxes that ship and store flat, then assemble.

Sustainability, stated only as far as it can be claimed
Two things can be said without overreach. FSC-certified and recycled materials are available as an option on our packaging work. And material choice has a direct effect on how much fibre a shipment uses — a box that is over-built for its contents consumes more material than the job requires, and a box that ships flat rather than assembled occupies less space in transit.
Beyond that, be sceptical of any supplier who offers blanket environmental claims about a material category. Recycled content, certification status and end-of-life handling are specific to the material actually used in your order, and they belong in the specification, not in a slogan.
Where a box usually gets over-specified
Three patterns come up again and again when buyers review their own specs.
Specifying corrugated for a box that never leaves a shelf. A fluted board inside a retail environment adds bulk and cost and delivers protection the box does not need. Paperboard handles the job with a better print surface.
Specifying paperboard for something that ships. The carton looks right in a photo and arrives crushed. This is not a material failure; it is a container being asked to do a structure’s work.
Specifying a material without specifying the load path. “Corrugated” tells a factory what to build the walls from. It does not tell them where the product is supported, whether it moves inside the box, or which face is likely to take the hit. Those are the details that decide whether the design works.
One note on numbers: we do not publish machine settings, board thicknesses or process parameters in articles like this one, because those values are a function of the specific material, the printing method and the equipment rather than a comparable constant across factories. What matters to a buyer is what a property decides in use — whether the panel flexes under load, whether the liner marks, whether the print holds definition on an uncoated surface. Those are the questions worth asking, and the answers come from a structural design review of your actual product.
