How Printing and Finishing Build a Custom Box, Layer by Layer
A logo can be printed in ink, foiled, embossed or glossed. On screen those look like variations of the same artwork. In the hand they are different objects: ink sits in the board, foil sits on top, emboss lifts the surface, and gloss changes how light travels across the panel. This guide follows a printed box in the order it is built—base print, protective ground, accent, then inspection—and explains what each step decides and how a fault shows up in the finished packaging.
The layer order: base print, lamination, accent
A finished custom box is a stack of decisions. The board is printed first. That base print carries colour, imagery, brand marks and information. Next, a lamination can be applied as a protective and visual ground. It changes how the printed surface feels and how light reflects from it. Finally, an accent finish—foil, emboss or spot UV—can be added on top. Each accent depends on the layers below it.
That order matters because the layers interact. Lamination can soften or sharpen the contrast of the base print. Foil needs a stable ground to release cleanly. Emboss raises the sheet, so nearby artwork may shift. Spot UV must register with the element it highlights. The same finishes behave differently across those structures, which is why the physical sample matters more than a specification sheet.
Printing the base: CMYK and Pantone
The base print is where the box becomes recognisable. We print full-colour CMYK and Pantone. CMYK builds colour from four process inks and suits photographs, gradients, soft shadows and many blended colours. Pantone uses mixed spot colours and suits solid brand colours, simple graphics and designs that must repeat across a packaging range. The choice decides how the artwork must be prepared, how the ink sits on the board, and how later finishes read on top.
A CMYK print can look rich and continuous, but faults are visible. A fine reversed line can fill in. A large solid area can look uneven if the ink lay is not controlled. A gradient can band. On the finished box, those appear as mottled solids, broken fine type or visible steps in a colour transition.
Pantone solves some of those problems for solid brand colours, but it has its own artwork cost. Each spot colour needs its own separation. Fine detail can still fill in. A spot colour over a busy background may need a clear area to stay legible. If Pantone is used for photographic artwork, the result can look flat. Lamination as the ground
Lamination is often described as protection, but it is also the ground that accents stand on. It turns raw printed board into a sealed, uniform layer. A gloss lamination reflects light and can make colours look deeper. A matte lamination softens reflection. Soft-touch lamination, which we publish for gift boxes, gives a velvety hand feel and a very low sheen.
The ground decides what an accent can do. Foil on gloss can look bright and sharp. Foil on soft-touch can look more muted and tactile, because the surrounding surface absorbs light. Spot UV on a matte or soft-touch ground creates strong contrast between gloss and non-gloss. Spot UV on a gloss ground has less contrast, so it may disappear unless placed over a darker printed area. Emboss works on many grounds, but the lamination must follow the raised shape without clouding or lifting.
Lamination faults are visible in the hand and under light. A laminated surface can show handling marks, especially on darker soft-touch panels. It can trap air and appear cloudy or bubbled. It can lift at an edge after folding. If the lamination is applied over a print that is not fully anchored, the finished box may show a mottled or silvery haze. A buyer who runs a thumb across a sample will notice these before reading a specification. For rigid gift boxes, lamination often works with foil and emboss to create a premium surface. Accent finishes one by one
Foil
Foil adds a reflective metallic or coloured accent. It can make a logo, border or small mark stand out without changing the base print. Our drawer boxes publish lamination, foil and spot UV, with the sleeve printed in full colour and the tray printable too. What foil costs in artwork freedom is simplicity. Fine lines, small counters and delicate serifs can fill in or break. A large solid foil area can look patchy if release is not clean. The best foil artwork uses clear shapes, enough space around the mark and clear contrast with the printed background.
A foil fault appears as a visible interruption. The foil may not release fully, leaving a dull or missing patch. It may fill in on fine detail, so a letter loses its counter. It may show a ragged edge or a halo where foil sits beyond the intended shape. Under light these faults are obvious because foil is meant to be crisp.
Emboss
Emboss raises the surface of the box. It adds a tactile accent that can be read with the eyes closed. It can be used for a logo, pattern or border, and it works when the brand wants a quiet premium signal rather than a reflective one. We publish emboss on packaging boxes and gift boxes. It can combine with foil for a raised reflective mark, or stand alone for a subtle effect.
Emboss costs artwork freedom because the shape must be strong enough to read as a raised form. Very fine detail can disappear or look uneven. Tight counters and thin strokes may not raise cleanly. If a printed element sits too close, it can shift or distort. If the emboss is large and close to a fold, the fold can become harder to control. An emboss fault appears as unevenness: shallower on one part of the panel, blurred where detail is too fine, or a shadow on the reverse side. When the box is assembled, a raised area near a fold can make the panel sit differently.
Spot UV
Spot UV is a gloss accent applied over the printed surface. It creates a localised reflective area, usually on a logo, pattern or key graphic. It is often used on drawer boxes, where we publish lamination, foil and spot UV. It is also a common way to add contrast to a matte or soft-touch ground without adding a separate material.
Spot UV costs artwork freedom because it must register with the print. The gloss needs its own mask, and that mask must sit exactly over the element it highlights. If the artwork is busy, spot UV can be hard to see. If the printed element is very fine, the gloss may look like a smudge. A spot UV fault appears as misregistration: gloss sitting slightly to one side, a cloudy area where it should be clear, or uneven coverage so part of the logo shines and part does not. On a folded box, an accent that crosses a fold can look broken or stretched.

Combining finishes
It is possible to combine finishes. Foil can sit inside an embossed area. Spot UV can sit on a matte lamination. Emboss can be used on a soft-touch surface. Each combination adds a production pass and a separate artwork layer, and each one must be checked against the others. The more accents, the more chances for registration problems or an uneven surface.
In practice, one strong accent usually reads better than three competing ones. A single foil logo on a soft-touch box can be enough. A single spot UV pattern on a matte panel can carry the design. When foil, emboss and spot UV compete on the same panel, the eye does not know where to rest. The strongest packaging often uses the base print for information and atmosphere, the lamination for feel, and one accent for emphasis.
Preparing artwork for a printed box
Artwork for a printed box is not only a picture. It is a set of layers that tell the factory what to print and what to finish. The base print should be separated from foil areas, emboss areas and spot UV areas. Each accent should have its own layer or clearly named spot channel. If accents are merged into the artwork, the factory has to guess, and guessing leads to registration faults.
Key elements should stay clear of wrapping, folding and glue zones. A logo across a fold can distort when the box is formed. Fine text near a wrapping zone can disappear around the curve. A foil mark across a glue area can interfere with how the box closes. The exact safe areas depend on the structure, so the best approach is to ask for a dieline and place artwork against it. The dieline shows where the box folds, where it wraps and where panels meet. Artwork that respects those zones will survive the finished box.
It also helps to keep accent artwork simple. Foil and emboss are not printing processes; they do not reproduce gradients or photographs in the same way. They work best as clear shapes, solid marks and deliberate lines. Spot UV follows a mask, but it still needs a clean edge. If artwork asks an accent to do something it cannot do, the sample will show it.
Why we do not publish machine settings
We deliberately do not publish machine settings for printing and finishing. The settings are not constants that a buyer can compare between suppliers. They change with the board, the ink, the lamination and the specific equipment in use. A setting that works on one rigid box may not work on a corrugated mailer or a folding carton. Publishing a table of settings would create the illusion of comparability without giving the buyer a reliable way to judge the finished packaging. What a buyer should compare instead is the physical sample: how the print sits, how the lamination feels, how the foil releases, how the emboss reads and how the spot UV registers. The sample is the specification that matters.
What to inspect on a sample
When a printed and finished sample arrives, inspect it as a finished object, not as a flat sheet. Fold it, close it, fill it if possible, and look at it under different light. Check the base print for even solids, clean fine detail and smooth gradients. Check lamination for cloudiness, bubbles, edge lift and handling marks. Check foil for clean release, sharp edges and fine detail that has not filled in. Check emboss for even depth across the panel and for any shadow on the reverse side. Check spot UV for registration to the printed element and for gloss that follows the shape rather than sitting beside it.
Then check interactions. Look at how accents sit near folds. Look at how lamination behaves where the box bends. Look at whether foil or spot UV crosses a glue area. Look at the inside of the box if it is printed, especially on gift boxes where inside and outside both carry colour. A sample that passes these checks is a better guide than any verbal description. If a fault appears, it is usually visible as a specific consequence: a patchy foil mark, a raised area that reads unevenly, a gloss accent that misses its target, or a laminated surface that shows marks.
