This is the format for door and room plates, reception counter tops, and desk plates where the reader is the person standing on the far side rather than seated in the visitor chair.

Standing plates sit on a weighted base, an angled block or a holder that tilts the face toward the reader. They are read by someone seated opposite the desk or standing at it — the classic reception and office-desk arrangement. Stability is the trade-off: the base footprint, the weight and the tilt angle decide whether the plate stays put when someone leans on the desk or slides a laptop past it.

The size question: why 20 × 8 cm became a standard and when to break it

A 20 × 8 cm plate is a working standard because it holds a useful amount of information in a proportion that suits a desk. In practice it carries a name, a role line and a small logo — two lines of text before the type starts getting small — and its 2.5:1 ratio matches the horizontal span a desk plate is read across.

Door and room plates need a different proportion entirely. A room number above a room name, or a department name above a floor reference, reads better stacked on a squarer plate than stretched along a long strip. Using the desk-plate proportion on a door is one of the most common mismatches in an office fit-out, because the plate is then either too narrow for the text or too long for the door stile.

Break the 20 × 8 cm standard when the content genuinely does not fit: a long multi-part or hyphenated name, a name plus a long job title, or a bilingual plate where two scripts sit stacked or side by side. Laser engraving removes material. The mark is cut into the plate rather than laid on it, so it is part of the surface: tactile, permanent, and it cannot rub off, flake or fade the way a layer of ink can. Contrast comes from the material underneath the marked layer, which is why engraving behaves differently on a two-layer acrylic than on an anodized metal face. Engraving reproduces logos and text precisely on the plate surface and holds up to handling, cleaning and the sort of abrasion a reception counter receives daily.

Printing lays colour on the surface. It carries full-colour brand marks, gradients, fine tints and photographic elements that engraving cannot express. What sits on top also wears on top, so the surface and any protective layer over it determine how the print survives.

For a name that may need to change, the marking method matters less than the mount. If names rotate, the plate is the wrong unit of replacement — an insert holder with a printed card lets you rename a desk without producing anything new. Where a whole plate is replaced, an engraved plate is simply reordered to the same template. For a logo, printing is right when the brand mark is full-colour; engraving is right when it is a single-colour mark that has to stay crisp for years. When the plate needs the etched metal route

Chemical etching creates precise recessed or raised detail by removing metal through a mask, which is the reason it is used for fine logos, very small text and serial numbers — detail that printed ink cannot hold at small sizes and that mechanical engraving may not resolve cleanly. That is the real argument for etched metal: resolution and permanence, not appearance alone.

Finishes include brushed, mirror, painted, anodized, and colour filling for etched recessed areas. A thin plate flexes, so it needs a flat substrate, a backing or a holder to sit in, and it will not stand on its own without support. A thick plate is rigid enough to stand or to be handled as a free object, but it cannot sit flush against a surface without a visible edge, and it will not fit a slim insert holder.

Mounting for metal plates is done with screws, adhesive tape or rivets, with drilled holes, rounded corners and backing tape as standard custom options. Colour control across a multi-plate order

One plate is a sample. Sixty plates are a colour-matching problem. Pantone matching is available for silk-screen and printed finishes, and for colour-filled etched areas, but the number on the swatch is only half the specification — the finish decides how that colour actually reads.

A brushed surface scatters light in one direction, so a brand colour on brushed metal can look lighter or duller depending on the viewing angle. A mirror finish reflects the room around it and changes apparent colour as the reader moves. Anodized surfaces carry their own base tone under any printed or filled colour. Painted surfaces are opaque and closest to a flat ink reference. Colour-filled etched recesses sit below the surface, so the same Pantone placed in a recess reads slightly darker next to a silk-screened plate, partly from the shadow the recess casts and partly from the change in surface plane.

The practical rule is to specify finish and colour together rather than separately, and to approve them together on the same physical sample. A colour approved on a printed card and then applied to a mirror-finish plate has not really been approved at all.

Mounting and deployment

There are four realistic mounting situations in an office, school or hotel, and each has a different tolerance for change.

Standing on a desk on its own base is the simplest and the most reversible — nothing is fixed, nothing is damaged, and the plate can be moved between desks. Adhesive tape on a glass partition or panel gives a clean, hardware-free face; it is a committed mount, and the surface it is applied to matters as much as the adhesive. Screws or rivets into a door, wall panel or reception fascia are the most permanent option and the right one where the plate has to survive impact, cleaning and years of traffic. The trade-off is between a committed mount and a reversible one. A committed mount looks cleaner because no frame or hardware shows, but renaming means a new plate or a new face. A reversible holder renames in seconds at the cost of a visible frame and a slightly smaller readable area inside it. Shared and hot-desking areas take reversible holders because the names there are the least stable part of the building. School classrooms usually split: a committed plate on the door, a reversible one on the desk if staff rotate.

A visitor moving through a building reads the reception plate, then the meeting-room plate, then a desk plate, all inside twenty minutes. If those three were specified by three different people at three different times, the building reads as three different buildings.

Fix the template before anything is produced: one font hierarchy, one margin, one mark position, one material and finish family across every plate type. Then decide the naming logic per location. The rollout sequence matters as much as the template. The sample-check checklist before the full run

A proof on screen hides most of the problems a physical plate will reveal. Run these checks on the sample before committing a floor:

  • Read it at the real distances. Seated across a desk, standing at a reception counter, and across a meeting table. If the role line disappears at two metres, the type is too small.
  • Check engraving depth and edge quality. The mark should be consistent across the plate, with clean edges and no burring or uneven depth between letters.
  • Check contrast under office lighting, not on a monitor. Warm downlights, cool LED panels and daylight through glazing all change how a mark reads against its material.
  • Confirm the longest and shortest name sit on the same baseline at the same type size. The longest name drives the layout; the shortest should not float.
