How Custom Drawer Boxes Work: Fit, Inserts and Unboxing
A drawer box is the only common luxury packaging structure that the customer has to operate. A magnetic-lid box is opened. A two-piece rigid box is lifted apart. A drawer box is pulled. That single movement — the sleeve held in one hand, the tray sliding out in the other — is where the structure earns its reputation, and it is also where it fails. Nearly everything that makes a drawer box feel expensive or feel cheap is decided by two things that most packaging guides skip: the fit between the sleeve and the tray, and the insert inside it.
This guide is about those two things. It covers what a drawer box is built from, what the sliding fit actually controls, how a tight fit and a loose fit each fail in a customer’s hands, how the insert decides whether a product is genuinely held or merely sitting in a box, and how the whole specification gets settled at the sampling stage rather than on paper. It also covers the delivery form — flat-pack — that buyers rarely ask about and often should.
What a drawer box is built from
A custom drawer box is a printed outer sleeve plus a sliding inner tray. That is the entire structure. The sleeve is a tube, usually open at one end and occasionally at both, and the tray slides inside it. The tray carries the product; the sleeve carries the branding and is the part a customer sees first on a shelf or in a mailer.
Because the two parts are separate, they can be specified separately. The material is cardboard, and the tray can be rigid or folding. Printing can run in full color on both the sleeve and the tray, which matters more than it sounds: when the tray is pulled out, its face is fully visible. A tray left plain or kraft is a visible downgrade at exactly the moment the customer is paying attention. Finishing — lamination, foil, spot UV — can be applied to the sleeve, and the same finishes can be added to the tray. Sizes are custom.
Where the design conversation should start is not the artwork but the tray’s internal dimensions. Those come from the product. The sleeve’s dimensions come from the tray plus the fit. And the fit is the part that cannot be settled from a drawing alone.
Why the sliding structure changes the unboxing moment
Magnetic-lid and two-piece boxes present a product. A drawer box performs it. There is a delay built into the mechanism: the customer pulls, the tray emerges, and the product is revealed progressively rather than all at once. For a serum, a fragrance, a compact, a pair of earrings or a watch, that delay is the point. It stretches a two-second reveal into something the customer participates in.
The performance aspect also raises the bar, because the tolerance for a bad movement is much lower than for a bad hinge. A lid that is slightly stiff is fine — nobody notices. A tray that is slightly stiff is a bad experience, because the customer is holding the box in one hand and pulling with the other, with no leverage and often with nails. The same asymmetry applies in the opposite direction: a lid that sits slightly loose is invisible, while a tray that slides on its own reads as sloppy the instant the box is tilted.
This is why drawer boxes reward buyers who think about structure before artwork. The artwork is what the customer sees. The fit is what the customer feels — and feel is what people describe when they recommend a product to someone else.
The sleeve-to-tray fit
What the fit decides
The tray should move with light, controlled friction. There should be enough resistance that it does not move unless it is pulled, and little enough that it moves when it is. When the customer releases the tray partway out, it should hold its position. That single behavior is what separates a drawer box that feels engineered from one that feels like two unrelated pieces of cardboard that happen to be the same size.
How a tight fit fails
If the sleeve grips the tray too firmly, the box feels stuck. The customer pulls harder, the tray jerks out, the product shifts inside, and the wrapper at the corners or along the finger cut can scuff or lift. On a retail counter a buyer may simply put the box back down. In a gifting or subscription context there is no second attempt — the first pull is the whole experience.
How a loose fit fails
If the sleeve is too generous, the tray slides before it is asked to. A box tilted in transit lets the tray walk out of the sleeve, and sleeve and tray can separate inside the shipping carton. A box shaken in the hand rattles, which customers read as cheap even when the materials are not. In the worst case the tray drops out when the customer picks the box up by the sleeve alone.
Why the fit is settled on a physical sample
The variables that decide fit — the board, the paper or cloth wrapper laminated to it, the thickness that wrapper adds at the fold, the weight of the product inside the tray, the length of the sliding travel — do not combine predictably on a drawing. Two boxes with identical stated dimensions but different wrappers will not feel the same in the hand.
We do not publish machine settings, because those settings are a function of the board, the wrapper and the equipment rather than a comparable constant that means the same thing in every factory. What we do instead is build the sample and slide it. Sample time is 1–3 days, and the sample is where the fit is decided.
When you receive a sample, test it the way a customer will. Load it with the actual product or a weight-matched stand-in, hold the sleeve in one hand and pull with the other, slide it fully out and back several times, then tilt the loaded box and see whether the tray moves on its own. A sample tested empty tells you very little, because the product weight is part of what the fit has to control.
The insert
The insert is the second half of the job, and it is the part buyers most often treat as an afterthought. A tray with no insert is a container, not packaging. The product will move inside the tray as the tray slides — which puts the movement directly at the moment the customer is watching.
Foam inserts are die-cut to follow a product silhouette, and they suit heavier or irregular items where the cavity needs to grip. Paper inserts, folded or die-cut from card, are lighter, fold flat before assembly and can be printed, which makes them part of the branding instead of hidden structure. Paper works well for lighter items and multi-piece sets where each component gets its own cut-out.
The choice between a single cavity and a divider layout is a question about the set, not about the budget. A single cavity is right when one object is the hero and it should sit alone in the centre of the tray. A divider layout is better when a set has components that must not touch — a bottle and its dropper, a compact and its applicator, a necklace and its earrings — and it also lets you control the order in which the customer removes things.
The insert sets the depth as well. The tray depth has to accommodate the insert plus the product, and the product should sit at or slightly below the tray rim. If it protrudes, it can catch on the sleeve as the tray slides, which turns a good fit into a bad experience.

Where a drawer box is right, and where it is over-designed
A drawer box is the right call when the reveal matters and the item is small enough to be pulled: cosmetics and skincare sets, jewelry and accessories, small tech accessories, gift sets and seasonal packaging, stationery and premium products, and subscription box components. It is also a strong choice when the packaging itself is part of the product story — when the customer is likely to keep the box rather than throw it away.
It is over-designed in a few common situations. Heavy or bulky products make the sliding travel awkward and put load on the sleeve. Very flat, very wide products have a long pull that feels less like a drawer and more like a tray being dragged. Low-value single items sold at high volume rarely justify a two-part structure with a fitted insert. And any box that will be mailed without an outer shipper adds a failure point that a magnetic-lid or two-piece box does not have.

Flat-pack delivery and what it means for storage and freight
Flat-pack delivery is the commercial detail buyers forget to ask about. Drawer boxes are delivered flat-packed and palletized: sleeves and trays arrive unassembled, stacked flat rather than built into shape.
The advantage is density. A pallet of flat sleeves and trays holds substantially more boxes than a pallet of assembled ones, which reduces warehouse space and inbound freight volume. For seasonal packaging bought months in advance, that difference is often what makes the order practical at all — flat components can be stored in a fraction of the footprint and assembled close to the fill date.
The trade-off is labor. Flat-pack moves assembly to your side of the process, or to your co-packer’s. For brands that fill and ship in-house, or that use a fulfilment partner with assembly capacity, this is normally a straightforward calculation. For brands that need boxes to arrive ready to fill on a fast line, assembled delivery is worth raising during sampling. The right answer depends on where your labor is cheaper and where your storage is tighter, not on a general rule.
