Custom Flags Explained: From Fabric Choice to Final Display
A specification sheet arrives with one line on it: custom flags, quantity 12. No shape, no size, no fabric, no fixing method. That single line could describe a forecourt on a main road, a 3 m × 3 m exhibition stand, a school playing field or a stadium concourse — and each of those needs a physically different product. Until the line is resolved, nobody can print it, finish it or ship it.
This is the reference page for resolving it. “Custom flag” is four different products
The word “flag” covers four product families, and the thing that separates them is how they are held up. That one difference drives fabric, size, print method and hardware.
Advertising display flags. The tall shapes you see at forecourts and storefronts: feather, teardrop and rectangle. They are printed on polyester or mesh and mounted on a flexible pole that bends with the wind instead of resisting it. Standard feather flag sizes are 3 m, 4 m and 5 m, with custom sizes and shapes made to order. Dye-sublimation on durable polyester gives the vibrant colour these displays depend on, and poles, cross bases and ground stakes are chosen alongside the flag.
Pole flags. Heavy-duty flags flown from a rigid pole — a flagpole, a facade mast or a fixed bracket. Fabric is heavy-duty polyester or nylon with UV protection for long outdoor life, and printing runs either dye-sublimation or screen printing. Double-sided printing or double-flag construction are both available, reinforced hems and seams are part of the build, and poles, clips, sleeves and bases are specified with the flag rather than after it. This is the family for permanent outdoor positions where the flag is under continuous load.
Hand waving flags. Small flags for crowds, tours and supporters. Polyester, with 14 × 21 cm and 20 × 30 cm as the standard sizes plus custom dimensions. Printing is full colour, double-sided, or a single-sided design with a mirror back, and the sticks are plastic, wooden or inflatable.
Rally flags. Large-format crowd and celebration flags. 30 × 45 cm and 45 × 60 cm are the common sizes, with larger sizes available. Full-colour dye-sublimation on polyester also reproduces photographs and complex artwork, and a plastic or wooden pole is included.
Team flags. Club, class, school and supporter flags. Knitted polyester, woven nylon and heavy-duty flag fabric for outdoor use, printed in full colour by dye-sublimation, from 14 × 21 cm up to 3 × 5 m. Finishing covers hemmed edges, sleeves, grommets and poles, and construction can be printed, sewn, or a combination with sewn borders.

The families also fail in different ways, which is why the classification has to come before any design work. A display flag fails at the base or the pole joint. A pole flag fails at the hem or the fly end, where the fabric takes the flapping load. A hand flag fails at the stick fixing. Fabric: what decides how a flag hangs, moves and survives
Fabric is the line most often missing from a specification sheet, and it is the one that changes the most about the finished product. Four fabrics cover most flag work.
Knitted polyester is the workhorse. The knitted construction gives it a soft hand and a little stretch, so it lifts and moves in light air — which is exactly what you want on a hand flag, a rally flag or an advertising display flag that has to look alive on a still day. Dye-sublimation sits well in it, colours come up saturated, and it drapes instead of creasing into hard lines.
Woven nylon has a tighter, slicker weave. It holds finer print detail and a crisper edge, which matters when the design carries small type, a crest or fine linework. It is the fabric to reach for when the artwork is detailed rather than bold.
Heavy-duty flag fabric is specified for permanent pole flags. It is built for the continuous flapping load at the fly end of a flag on a mast, and UV protection is a property of the fabric we offer for that outdoor role. It is the wrong choice for a hand flag — too much fabric for a wrist — and the right choice for anything that stays up.
Mesh is the open-weave option. Wind passes through it instead of filling it, so it is chosen wherever a solid panel would act like a sail: large roadside displays, exposed sites, and any position where the pole or the base is the limiting factor rather than the print.
Fabric choice and print method are linked. Dye-sublimation needs a polyester-based substrate to take the dye into the fibre, which is why polyester dominates flag production. Screen printing is more comfortable on heavier substrates. And weight — usually written as grammes per square metre — determines how a flag hangs, how it sounds in wind and how it feels in the hand, yet it is frequently left off the sheet. It is the single line most worth adding.
Printing methods: dye-sublimation as the standard, screen printing as the alternative
Dye-sublimation prints into the fabric rather than onto it. The design is transferred as a gas that bonds with the fibre, so there is no ink layer sitting on the surface to crack, stiffen or peel as the flag flexes. That is why a sublimated flag stays soft after printing and why it survives being folded, sleeved and pulled over a pole.
The practical consequence for a buyer is detail. Because the dye enters the fibre, dye-sublimation carries full-colour artwork, gradients, photographic content and complex multi-colour designs without the design having to be simplified into a countable number of colours. Screen printing is the alternative, and it is not a downgrade — it is a different fit. It lays a heavier, more opaque deposit of ink through a mesh screen, one screen per colour, which makes it strong for bold, flat, single-colour or spot-colour designs on heavier substrates. Where it fits poorly is complex multi-colour artwork: each colour needs its own screen, fine gradients cannot be reproduced, and the deposit adds a slight stiffness that is noticeable on a light flag.
“Full colour” on a flag specification really means the design is not limited to a fixed palette — it does not automatically mean the artwork will read well. A flat colour block and a photograph behave differently on the same fabric: the colour block holds its edge from a distance, while photographic content relies on the fabric’s ability to hold fine tonal transitions, which is why woven nylon is often paired with detailed artwork and knitted polyester with bold graphics. Sleeves, hems, grommets and reinforcement
Finishing is the first thing to fail and the last thing a buyer checks on a quote, which is the wrong way round.
A pole sleeve is the fabric channel that the pole passes through. On a display flag it is part of a sleeve-and-clip system that holds the printed panel taut on a flexible pole; the sleeve width has to match the pole diameter, and a sleeve that is too loose lets the flag rotate and flap against itself.
Hemmed edges stop fraying on an outdoor edge. A cut edge on a flag that flaps is an edge that will fray, so the perimeter is folded and stitched — and the fold adds a little weight that helps the flag hang properly.
Grommets are the metal fixing points used when a flag is tied off, laced to a rail or stacked against a wall. They are the specification for flags that are fixed at points rather than sleeved onto a pole.
Reinforced hems and seams go where the flag is under continuous load — the fly end, the corners, and the point where a sleeve meets the body. A pole flag on a mast is loaded every time the wind moves it, and the reinforcement is what keeps the shape.
The reason this section matters commercially is that finishing is where two quotes for the same “custom flag” diverge without either sheet saying so. A single-stitched perimeter and a reinforced, double-folded hem look identical on a line item and behave very differently after a season outdoors. Ask for the finishing detail in writing.
Single sided, double sided and the mirror back
This is the specification that most often arrives unclear, and it has three real answers.
Single-sided with a mirror back is the standard economy route. The design is printed on one face, the dye penetrates the fabric, and from behind you see the same layout reversed. Readable text becomes backwards text from the reverse side. For a flag seen from one direction — a stage backdrop, a hand flag in a crowd facing the camera — that is usually fine.
True double-sided printing puts a readable image on both faces. Two printed panels are joined with a light-blocking layer between them so the front design does not show through the back. It is the specification for a roadside position where traffic approaches from both directions, a corner storefront, or a display in a crowd that can surround it.
Double-flag construction builds two printed panels as one flag. It gives the same readable-both-sides result through construction rather than through a blocking layer, and it is used where the flag needs more body on the pole.
The reading consequence is the whole point. Reversed text is not a printing fault — it is what single-sided means. If the display will be approached from more than one direction, that decision belongs on the specification sheet before artwork is prepared, not after the flags arrive. Poles and bases: the ground decides, not the flag
Hardware is usually treated as an accessory. It is not. The base is what keeps the display upright, and the surface it stands on determines which base will work.
Cross bases are for indoor floors, exhibition halls and any hard, level surface. They are folded steel or plastic cross feet that sit flat, and they need either weight or a low-wind indoor position to stay put. On a polished hall floor they will slide unless they are loaded.
Ground stakes are for soil and grass. A stake drives into the ground and holds the pole at its base. On hard ground, compacted gravel or a paved surface, a stake cannot enter, and forcing it damages both the stake and the pole.
Pole-and-clip systems belong to the advertising display family, where the flexible pole carries the printed panel through a sleeve and clips hold it in place at the top and bottom.
For hand flags, the choice runs across plastic, wooden and inflatable sticks. Plastic is the general-purpose option, wooden gives a firmer grip for repeated waving, and inflatable sticks are chosen where packed volume and safety in a dense crowd matter more than rigidity.
Choosing the wrong base produces a predictable set of failures: a flag that tips in wind because the base is too light for the panel area, a base that slides across a polished floor, a stake that will not enter hard ground, or a pole too short for the sleeve so the flag never tensions properly. Sizes and viewing distance
Size is not about impact in the abstract. It is about how far away the reader is and how much message has to survive the distance.

Two rules sit behind the table. First, message capacity falls faster than size rises: doubling a flag’s height does not double the words it can carry, because legibility is governed by the smallest element, not the largest. Second, a small flag in a crowd is read at arm’s length, so fine detail can survive; the same detail on a 5 m display flag disappears into visual noise. Matching a flag to the setting
Retail and roadside. Advertising display flags on flexible poles, polyester or mesh depending on exposure, dye-sublimation print, cross base indoors at a shopfront and ground stakes on a verge. The panel carries one message.
Exhibition and trade stand. Display flags with cross bases for hall floors; mesh where the hall is draughty or the stand is near a door. A pole sleeve that matches the pole diameter exactly keeps the panel taut.
Sports and club use. Team flags in knitted polyester, woven nylon or heavy-duty flag fabric from 14 × 21 cm up to 3 × 5 m, full-colour dye-sublimation, hemmed edges with sleeves or grommets depending on whether they fly from a mast or hang on a wall. School and campus. Hand waving flags at 14 × 21 cm and 20 × 30 cm for students, with plastic or wooden sticks; team flags on a pole for the field; a double-sided specification if the flag is read from both sides of a pitch.
Community and civic display. Rally flags at 30 × 45 cm and 45 × 60 cm with included poles for marches and gatherings; larger sizes where a lead banner is needed.
Hospitality frontage. Pole flags on a rigid mast in heavy-duty polyester or nylon with UV protection, reinforced hems and seams, and a sleeve or clip system matched to the existing pole.
From artwork to approved flag
Accepted artwork files are AI, PDF, CDR, PSD at 300+ dpi, or high-resolution JPG. Vector files are preferred because they scale without loss, but the file format is the smaller half of the job.
The larger half is proportion. A logo file is built for a page or a sign, not for a 3 m × 1 m flag or a 14 × 21 cm hand flag. The layout is rebuilt for the flag’s actual proportions rather than stretched into them, which usually means re-spacing the elements, re-sizing the type relative to the finished dimensions, and deciding which parts of the design sit where the sleeve and hem will take up space. Stretching a square logo into a long flag is the most common artwork problem, and it is invisible on screen and obvious on fabric.
After that comes the mockup approval step: a visual of the design on the actual flag shape, at the actual proportions, with the finishing and fixing points marked. Production starts from the approved mockup, not from the original file.
When an event date is fixed, the planning figures are straightforward: samples are turned around in 1–3 days, and production runs 2–10 days from artwork approval, with the variation coming from the printing method and the quantity. Working backwards from the event, the mockup approval is the step that has to be protected — a design change after approval restarts the clock.
The sample-check checklist before the full run
A pilot flag is the cheapest risk reduction available, and it is only useful if it is checked properly. Six things to look at:
- Print quality — colour accuracy against the approved reference, and edge sharpness on the smallest text and thinnest lines.
- Fabric hand — how the material feels and how it hangs. A fabric that feels stiff will not move in light air; a fabric that feels flimsy will not hold shape on a pole.
- Fixings — that the sleeve slides onto the pole without slack, or that the grommet positions line up with the frame they will be tied to.
- The back reading — turn the flag around and read it. If the reverse shows text you did not expect to be reversed, the specification was wrong, not the print.
- Finishing on all four edges — the hem fold, the stitching, the corners and any reinforcement at the fly end.
- The assembled display — set the whole thing up on the actual surface, at the actual wind exposure if you can, and watch whether it stands, tips or slides.
A sample that passes all six is a specification you can repeat across a campaign. A sample that fails one is a conversation worth having before the full run rather than after it.
