Two operators can order what looks like the same neon sign and end up with two very different objects. One hangs on a plasterboard wall above a banquette, plugged into a socket behind the bar, dimmed to a warm glow at midnight. The other sits on a stand behind a photo wall, runs on a rechargeable pack because there is no power in that corner of the venue, and is packed into a flight case on Sunday night.

Both are custom neon signs. What separates them is not the glow — it is a chain of decisions that starts with the job the sign has to do and ends with the person holding a drill. This guide walks through that chain in the order a buyer actually faces it, so the specification you send to a factory matches the room you are putting it in.

Start with the job, not the shape

The most expensive mistakes in signage come from choosing a look before defining a job. Four common jobs pull the specification in four different directions.

An interior feature. The sign lives above a bar, behind a host stand, or on the wall of a private dining room. It is seen from a few metres, often at an angle, and it shares the room with lighting that changes through the evening. Weight matters less here than how the sign reads against the wall behind it, and how easily its brightness can be brought down when the room gets dark.

A shopfront sign. It faces outward, it is seen from across a street by people moving past, and it is expected to survive the position it is fixed in. The fixing surface, the route of the power cable and the exposure of the spot all have to be settled before anything else.

A photo-wall or backdrop piece. This is a sign people stand in front of rather than read from a distance. It needs to sit at a comfortable height for photographs, it often needs a stand rather than a wall fixing, and the text is usually short.

A single-night event sign. It travels. It may be installed and struck the same day, in a venue that will not allow drilling. Rechargeable power and a stand change what the production team has to plan, and packing becomes part of the design.

Naming the job first tells you which questions are worth asking. A sign for a permanent shopfront and a sign for a three-day activation share a look, but almost nothing else.

LED neon versus traditional glass neon

This is the comparison buyers ask about most, and it is usually framed as a question about authenticity. Both produce a continuous line of light; the difference is what that line is made of and what that means on installation day.

LED neon flex is a flexible light source shaped into letters, mounted on an acrylic backing and frame. Compared with traditional glass neon, it is safer, lighter and more durable than glass, with the same glow effect. Glass neon is bent from glass tubing, which is why it is heavier, more fragile in transit, and less forgiving of a knock during installation.

For most restaurant, bar and event work, the practical argument is simple: a lighter sign is easier to fix to a wall, easier to move between sites, and less likely to arrive damaged. Where the sign goes, and what has to be true about that wall

A sign is only as good as the point it hangs from. Before size or font, settle these four things about the location.

The fixing surface. Plasterboard, brick, tile, concrete, glass and ceiling grids all behave differently. A heavy sign on a hollow wall needs different hardware from the same sign on brick. If the venue forbids drilling — common in rented units and listed interiors — the sign has to hang from something that already exists, or stand on its own.

What the fixing point can carry. The sign’s own weight is only part of the load. Mounting hardware, the frame and any stand add to it, and a sign suspended on a chain pulls on the ceiling above rather than the wall behind. If nobody knows what is inside the wall, that is a reason to choose a lighter construction or a stand.

The cable route. A plug-in sign needs a socket within reach of its cable, and the cable needs a path that is not across a walkway or in front of a camera. If the socket is on the wrong wall, the options are a longer cable run, a different position, or a rechargeable sign.

The viewing angle. A sign read from the street is seen from further away and often at an angle, while a sign inside is read from a table or a doorway. The same artwork can work in both places, but not at the same size. Decide which view matters most and let the other one be secondary.

Power: plug-in or rechargeable

Power is the decision that most often forces a design change late in the process, so it is worth making early.

A plug-in sign assumes the venue can deliver power to the exact spot. That is usually straightforward behind a bar or on a shopfront, where a socket or a spur already exists. It is less straightforward in the middle of a dining room, on a mezzanine, or on a wall that was never wired for anything.

A rechargeable sign removes the cable from the equation. For an event production team, that changes the planning in two ways: the sign can go where the design wants it rather than where the power is, and the schedule has to include charging between sessions. A rechargeable sign is not “set and forget” — someone has to own that routine, especially on a multi-day activation where the same unit is used every evening.

Both options are available on the same product, which means the decision can be made on venue conditions rather than on the sign’s appearance. If the site is a permanent venue with a known socket position, plug-in is usually the simpler choice. If the site is temporary, moving, or nowhere near power, rechargeable is the one that keeps the design intact.

Several things drive cost without being visible in a photograph: the size of the sign, the number of characters, the backing and frame, how many colours are involved, whether power is plug-in or rechargeable, the control type, the mounting hardware, and packing and freight. Settling the list above early is the most reliable way to avoid reworking a sign after it has been made.

Text, sizes and viewing distance

The single most common cause of disappointment is a sign that is the right size for the wall but the wrong size for the distance people read it from.

Character height, not overall sign width, is what governs legibility. The distance at which text stays readable grows roughly in proportion to how tall the letters are, which is why a short word in large characters reads from across a room while a long sentence in the same character height does not. A sign carrying a full sentence at a character height that suits a small wall will only work when people are standing close to it — which may be perfectly fine for a photo backdrop, and completely wrong for a shopfront.

Word count discipline follows from that. On a small wall, three or four words in generous characters will almost always outperform a longer phrase squeezed to fit. Line breaks matter too: a phrase broken in the wrong place reads awkwardly at a distance, and it is much easier to fix in the artwork than after production.

If the sign is meant to be read from the street, walk the actual sightline — from the pavement across the road, from the bus stop, from the angle a car approaches. If it is meant to be read inside, stand where guests sit. That is a more useful measurement than any dimension on a drawing.

Controls and dimming in a venue

A venue is not lit the same way at 19:00 and at 23:00. Early in the evening, ambient light is high and the sign has to hold its own against daylight, house lighting and window reflections. Later, when the room is dark, the same light output that read as confident at seven can dominate the space and wash out the wall behind it.

That is the practical argument for a dimmer. A switch gives on and off; a dimmer lets the sign be set for the room as it changes through service, and a remote control means the adjustment can be made without reaching behind a bar or climbing to a wall fixing. For a sign that is part of the atmosphere rather than a sign that has to be legible, dimming is often the difference between a feature that sits in the room and one that fights it.

Reproducing one sign across several sites

Groups and franchise operators face a different problem: making site three match site one, eighteen months later, when the designer who drew the original has moved on.

The answer is to treat the artwork file as the single source of truth. The sign itself is a physical object, but the specification lives in a document: exact wording and line breaks, character height, overall dimensions, colours, backing and frame, power and control choice, and mounting method. If that record is kept with the artwork, a repeat order is a confirmation rather than a redesign.

Two habits make this work. First, check a proof before production — a proof catches a misspelled word, a wrong line break or a logo redrawn incorrectly, all of which are far cheaper to fix before the sign is made. Second, record what actually arrived and how it was installed, including any deviation the installer made on site. That note is what keeps the second and third units consistent with the first.

Mounting and installation day

The installer is the last person in the chain and the one most likely to be given an incomplete brief. What they need from the venue is straightforward:

  • A confirmed fixing point on a surface that can carry the sign and its hardware, with permission to drill where drilling is required.
  • A power point within reach of the cable if the sign is plug-in, or a charging plan if it is rechargeable.
  • Access to the wall or ceiling at the time of installation — not blocked by furniture, stock or a delivery.
  • The mounting hardware that came with the sign, kept with the sign rather than separated during unpacking.

Where a stand is used instead of a wall fixing, the requirements change: the sign needs level floor space, protection from being knocked, and a position that still gives the intended sightline.
