Why Choose Hand-Painted Instead of Printed or AI Art

The market is full of “portraits” that are printed on canvas, or generated by AI and lightly touched up to look painted. They are cheap because no artist spent days on them — and they look flat in person. Here is what you actually get from a real hand-painted commission:

• Visible brush texture. Our oil paintings use thick impasto brushwork, so light catches the strokes and the surface changes as you walk past it. A print has one uniform, glossy plane.
• Permanence. Oil canvas is prepared with anti-fade treatment, so the colour holds instead of greying out the way inexpensive dye prints do.
• A one-off object. Two buyers can send the same style brief and receive two different paintings. There is no file, no reprint, no second copy.
• Real value in the details. Fur, lace, the highlight in an eye, the wrinkles around a smile — these are painted, not filtered.

How to tell real hand-painting from a print or AI imitation: look closely at the edges of colour. Hand-painted work shows individual brush marks, slightly uneven blending and a build-up of paint layers. Printed copies show a fine halftone dot pattern or a uniform pixel grid, and AI images tend to have perfectly smooth, glassy surfaces with odd details in hands, jewellery or lettering. Ask for progress photos during production — a studio that paints will always have them.

Which Style Fits Your Subject

Not every photo belongs in the same medium. This is the single most important decision you will make, because style changes how much likeness, softness or playfulness the finished portrait carries.

A quick rule: choose realistic when the person’s real features are the point of the gift. Choose academic when you want a softer, more classical atmosphere. Choose watercolor for light, airy pieces in small formats. Choose cartoon or illustration when the portrait is meant to be playful, stylised and unmistakably not a photograph — cartoon and Q-version styles are intentionally not realistic, which is exactly why they work as fun gifts.

Sizes, Canvas and Framing Options

We work in both rectangular and square formats, in centimetres:

• Rectangular: 40×60, 50×70, 60×80, 70×90, 90×120 cm
• Square: 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120 cm

As a guide, square 20–40 cm suits a single headshot or a pet; 50–80 cm handles couples, half-body and family compositions comfortably; 90 cm and above are statement pieces for a living room, staircase wall, hotel lobby or showroom.

Canvas and frames. Oil paintings are made on oil canvas with anti-fade treatment, stretched over inner frames of preservative-treated pine. Framing is available in solid wood in three colours — black, white and natural — or frameless if you prefer a clean gallery edge. Mounting is also offered: solid frame plus high-clarity glass or acrylic and a backboard. Depending on the order, hanging hooks and no-mark nails can be included so the piece goes straight onto the wall.

One important note before you order: some listings deliver a digital file only, with printing and framing quoted separately, while others ship the finished framed painting. Please confirm frame inclusion with us when you place your order so there are no surprises at delivery.

How Your Photo Becomes a Portrait

Every painting follows the same four stages: line sketch and composition → base colour layer → local detailing → overall finishing. The sketch stage is where your approval happens, and it is the most important checkpoint in the whole order.

Photo requirements. Send the clearest photo you have. For detail like fur, hair or fabric texture, we recommend at least 2000 px on the long edge. Avoid strong backlight, overexposure and dim indoor light — all three destroy the shadow information an artist needs. A clear, frontal portrait works best. If you want several people in one painting, separate single-person photos are fine; we combine them into one composition.

Composition and cropping. Headshot crops to the shoulders, half-body to the waist, and full-body to the feet. Tell us which you want, and we will build the sketch around it. If the source photos were taken in different lighting, the sketch stage is where we harmonise them.

Approval and revisions. You approve the line sketch first, and sketch revisions are unlimited until you are happy. Only then does painting begin. Small changes are still possible after colouring. If you decide to switch to a different photo or a different style after work has started, the order re-enters the design stage and an extra fee applies. Many illustration studios also offer a full refund if the first draft is rejected — ask us what applies to your specific commission.

Progress updates. Most of our studios send step photos while the painting is in progress and only ship once the customer is satisfied with the result. If you would like progress photos, just ask when ordering.

Ordering, Timing and Shipping

The order flow is simple:

1. Send your photo and tell us the style, size and frame you want.
2. Confirm the quote and place your order — MOQ is 1 pc, so a single portrait is always welcome.
3. Receive your preliminary sketch or effect preview within 1-3 days and approve it (or request changes).
4. We paint. Production takes 2-10 days after design approval, depending on size and complexity.
5. The finished artwork is packed in a sturdy art tube or shockproof packaging and shipped to you.

Finished paintings travel rolled in a rigid art tube or in shockproof packaging designed for framed artwork, so corners and canvas surfaces arrive intact.

A note on returns. Custom art is made for one customer and cannot be resold, so returns are generally not accepted. That is exactly why we build in the approval stage: revisions are handled during design and before finalisation, when changes are still free and easy. Once the painting is finished and shipped, the piece is yours alone.
