Choosing Hard Enamel, Soft Enamel or Die-Struck Pins
Three quotes come back. One says hard enamel, one says soft enamel, one says die-struck. All three descriptions read like synonyms for “metal pin with your logo on it”, and each is priced differently for reasons nobody has explained. The logo file is the same. The purpose is the same. Yet only one of those constructions will actually reproduce the artwork in front of you — the other two will lose a colour, lose a line, or lose the thing that makes the mark recognisable.
The difference between the three is not styling. It is construction: what happens to the metal surface after the body is formed, and how colour — or the absence of it — sits on that surface. Construction follows from two things you already know before any supplier touches the file: the artwork, and how the pin will be worn.
Three constructions, three surfaces
All three types begin as the same object. A metal body is stamped or cast to shape, trimmed to the outline, and plated. Zinc alloy and iron are the common base metals for enamel pins, with brass also in use. Up to that point, hard enamel, soft enamel and die-struck pins are identical.
The difference appears at the colouring and finishing stage.
- Hard enamel — colour is applied into the recesses, then ground back and polished until the enamel sits level with the metal lines. The finished surface is flat. Run a finger across it and nothing catches.
- Soft enamel — colour is applied into the recesses and left below the top of the metal lines. The surface is textured: raised outlines you can feel, colour sitting in the valleys between them.
- Die-struck — no colour is applied at all. The design lives entirely in the relief of the stamped or etched metal, read through plating tone and the shadows that relief throws.
That is the whole mechanical difference. Everything else — which construction suits fine linework, which one survives a jacket zip, which one belongs on a formal crest — follows from it. Hard enamel: what the extra finishing buys you
Hard enamel carries the most finishing work after colouring: fill, cure, grind flat, polish. That sequence is what separates it from soft enamel, and it is where the design consequences come from.
What the flat surface buys is contact behaviour. On a textured pin, the raised metal lines are the highest points and therefore the first things to meet a table edge, a bag strap or a zipper. On a hard enamel pin the whole face shares the contact, so abrasion spreads across a larger area and scuffing shows less over months of daily wear. For a pin that stays on a blazer, a lanyard or a bag, that matters.
Designs that benefit: clean logo shapes, separated colour blocks with clear boundaries, formal recognition pieces, long-service pins, club and school badges with a strong silhouette. Flat colour areas read evenly, and the polished surface gives the piece a deliberate, finished look.
What it costs in design terms: very fine linework has less room to stand out. With metal sitting in the same plane as the colour, definition comes from contrast between the plating tone and the enamel rather than from depth, so a hairline detail that relies on shadow gets quieter. Colour count deserves attention too — hard enamel colours are opaque flat fills, and two adjacent tones that look clearly different on a screen can converge once the surface is level and reflecting light. If a mark depends on subtle tonal separation rather than contrast, that is a reason to look at custom enamel badges samples before committing.
Soft enamel: where it still wins
Soft enamel leaves the colour recessed below the metal line, which produces a surface with dimension. The raised outline catches light and throws a slight shadow, giving every shape an edge.
The practical advantage is detail retention. On a 20mm pin, thin metal lines with colour sunk between them hold definition that a flat polished surface cannot, because the relief is doing the work instead of colour contrast. This is why line-heavy illustrations and outlined logos often reproduce more faithfully in soft enamel than in hard.
Natural fits: event giveaways, merchandise runs, fundraising pins, and designs with more line detail than a flat surface can carry. It is also the construction that lets plating tone frame every colour area — gold, silver, antique brass, copper, black nickel or rose gold outlines become a border around each fill. That can be used deliberately: black nickel with saturated colours reads graphic and modern, while antique brass with muted colours reads heritage.
The trade-off is wear. Raised lines are the contact surface, so on a pin worn daily the highest points can dull first, and plating is what dulls. For a pin handed out at an event and kept in a drawer, this is not a real concern. For a name badge worn five days a week, it is. Die-struck: when colour is not the point
Die-struck pins carry no enamel. The design is entirely in the metal — relief raised or etched into the body, then plated. There is no fill, so the pin is read through plating tone and the shadows cast by the relief.
Where it belongs: formal crests, insignia-style designs, heritage marks, monograms and minimalist logos — anything where a gold, antique brass, copper or black nickel surface is the design rather than a background to it. Antique finishes deepen relief because the darker tone settles into the recesses while the highlights stay bright, increasing apparent depth without adding a single colour.
The honest limit is the absence of colour fill. A multi-colour illustrated logo is the wrong artwork for this option: a die-struck version would be a monochrome metal interpretation of the mark, not a reproduction of it. If three colours are what make the logo recognisable, die-struck removes the recognition. It is also less forgiving of artwork that uses colour to separate elements which would otherwise touch in relief — with no fills, two adjacent shapes must be separated by a raised line or a gap, or they merge into one form.

Match the artwork before you match the price tier
This is the step most buyers skip. They choose a construction first, then discover the artwork does not fit it. Run the checks in this order.
- Count the enamel colours. If the design is built from a handful of separated flat colours, enamel fill maps onto it directly. If it carries many colours, or colours that blend into one another, enamel becomes a series of compromises.
- Look for gradients and shading. Continuous tone cannot be reproduced by colour fill. This is not a supplier limitation; it is how recessed enamel works. Any gradient in the artwork rules out hard and soft enamel and points toward printed artwork under a dome.
- Measure the thinnest line. We work from vector artwork (AI, SVG or CDR) and reproduce fine linework down to 1mm detail on standard 20–25mm pins. If the thinnest element is under that, the options are to thicken the element, scale the pin up, or accept that it will be approximated.
- Test small text at actual size. Standard pins run from 16mm to 50mm, with custom sizes available, and a line of text that occupies 3mm on screen may close up once the pin is 16mm wide. If the text only works at the larger end of the range, the size is effectively fixed, which in turn constrains the construction.
- Check whether the logo depends on a coloured background behind metal lines. If the mark is built as coloured shapes separated by metal, enamel fill maps to it. If it is a flat mark on a coloured field, die-struck can only reproduce the metal portion.
- Then match the wearing scenario. Worn daily on fabric, handed out at an event, mounted on a backing card, or pinned to a uniform — the scenario decides the backing, and sometimes the surface.
Where the epoxy dome changes the answer
Printed artwork under a clear dome is the route for everything enamel cannot hold: gradients, photographic detail, soft shading, fine multi-colour work, and small text that needs to stay legible. The print carries unlimited colour, and the dome adds scratch resistance to the surface along with a glossy, slightly magnified look.
When printed-plus-dome beats both enamel options: artwork with continuous tone, photographic logos, illustrations with more colours than enamel recesses can practically separate, and any design where colour must blend rather than sit in blocks.
When it does not: when the design depends on the metal. If the character of a logo comes from raised metal lines, or from the contrast between a plated surface and enamel colour, print flattens it — everything becomes ink on a flat base under a dome. Enamel and die-struck both keep metal as a visible part of the design; print treats it as a substrate. The dome also raises the profile slightly and reads glossier than any enamel surface, which changes how formal the pin feels in the hand.
Plating and backing: the two variables that quietly change perceived quality
Plating is applied over the base metal, so the plating tone is what the reader sees on every raised metal line, border and letterform. Options include gold, silver, antique brass, copper, black nickel and rose gold. The finish is doing more work than most buyers expect.
- On die-struck pins, plating is the entire design. Antique tones settle into recesses and deepen relief; bright polished tones lift the highlights so the relief reads sharper.
- On hard enamel pins, plating appears only as level lines and borders. A bright polish lifts a flat surface and makes it look formal; a dark matte tone such as black nickel gives it a modern, graphic read.
- On soft enamel pins, plating draws the outline of every colour area. Dark plating makes colours pop; warm antique plating mutes them and pushes the piece toward a heritage look.
Backing is the variable buyers consider last and wearers notice first. Butterfly clutch and rubber clutch are the standard options for fabric. Magnetic backing avoids pin holes entirely, which is why it suits staff uniforms and corporate wear where garments are reused. Safety pin and adhesive backings serve specific mounting needs, such as a flat surface or a card. A premium front on a backing that does not suit the garment is a mismatch the wearer feels every time they put it on.
Choosing wrongly: what each mismatch actually costs you
Three errors account for most of the rework we see.
Colour artwork specified as die-struck. No enamel is applied, so the colour is simply absent. The result is a monochrome metal pin that may read as a different mark entirely. Recovering from it means a new tooling decision, not an adjustment.
Gradient artwork specified as enamel. Enamel cannot blend two colours continuously. The result is banding — stepped bands of flat colour standing in for a gradient — or an effect that cannot be produced at all. Discovering this after tooling means starting the tooling again.
A fine-line logo ordered at a size too small to hold the detail. Lines merge, counters fill in, small text closes up. The pin still functions as an object, but the mark is no longer the mark. The usual fixes are enlarging the pin or simplifying the artwork, and both send the design back to proof.
In each case the real cost is a rework cycle and the delay that comes with it, on top of tooling or a proof that has already been approved. When a pin is tied to a fixed date — an event, a launch, a long-service ceremony — schedule slippage is the expensive part.
Test one pin before committing the run
A single proofed pin settles more than any comparison chart. The surface feel — flat against textured — is obvious in the hand and invisible on a screen. Colour against plating shifts in ways a digital proof does not show, because enamel tones sit next to a reflective metal border in real light. The smallest element can be checked for line definition at actual size. And the backing can be tested on the actual garment, which is the only way to know whether a magnetic or clutch fitting behaves as expected.
